My daughter married a Korean man wh

My daughter married a Korean man when she was 21. She hasn’t been home in twelve years, but every year she sends me 100 thousand dollars. This Christmas, I decided to visit her in secret. When I opened the door to her house… I froze.

Part 2

“Isabella…?”

My voice was barely a murmur that faded into the air, as if the walls refused to answer me. I stepped forward cautiously, feeling how every creak of the floorboards broke the silence in an unsettling way.

“Sweetheart… are you here?”

Nothing.

The silence was absolute.

My heart began to pound, not out of excitement, but from a dark sensation growing inside me, like a shadow falling at dusk. I closed the door carefully behind me, as if afraid of interrupting something… or someone.

The house, impeccable and tidy, looked more like a showroom than a home. On a perfectly positioned glass table sat a vase of flowers. I walked over and touched them: they were artificial.

Who lives like this…? I thought, uneasy.

I kept walking.

To the right, I found a modern, gleaming kitchen, like something out of a magazine. I opened the fridge.

Empty.

No water. No food. Nothing.

A chill ran down my spine.

I walked up the stairs slowly, holding onto the railing. Every step was filled with doubt and hope. Maybe she was working. Maybe she would come back at any moment and this would all just be a misunderstanding. Maybe she would hug me and everything would go back to normal.

But when I reached the top… I knew that wouldn’t happen.

There were three bedrooms.

I opened the first one. Empty.

The second. The same.

The third… That was where everything changed.

It was the only place with signs of life. There was a bed, a desk, and on it, a laptop that was powered on.

I approached slowly, almost afraid it would vanish if I touched it.

On the screen, there was an open file. And it was in English.

My heart stopped for a second.

I sat down. And I began to read.

“Mom,

If you are reading this, it’s because you decided to come.

I knew it. I always knew you would.”

Tears began to blur my vision.

“Forgive me.

Not for stopping loving you… because that never happened.

But I had to disappear.

The life you think I have… isn’t real.”

I felt the air grow heavy.

“Min-jun is not who he seems.

When I met him, I thought he was a successful, confident, charming man. He promised me a perfect life… and I believed him.

But after we got married, everything changed.

He wasn’t a simple businessman.

He’s involved in… dangerous things.”

A shiver ran through my body.

“I can’t give you details. It’s safer that way.

But I want you to understand something: I didn’t stay by choice.

I stayed because I couldn’t escape.

I tried… many times.

But he always knew everything.

Until one day he told me:

‘You can leave… but your mother will pay the consequences.’

And that’s when I realized I was trapped.”

“No…” I whispered, crying.

“The money I send you every year is not a gift.

It’s my way of protecting you.

As long as he believes I am obedient… you are safe.

But if he suspects anything…

I don’t want to imagine what would happen.”

I felt my soul breaking.

“That’s why I never came back.

That’s why I always said I was fine.

Because as long as you believed it… you were safe.

And I could keep holding on.”

I closed my eyes, unable to continue for a few seconds.

Everything I thought… was a lie. My daughter didn’t abandon me. She was protecting me.

“If you came all this way, it’s because something inside you already knew.

You are strong, Mom.

But now that you are here… I have to tell you something:

Don’t look for me. Don’t try to find me. I don’t live here anymore.

In fact… I never really lived here.”

I opened my eyes, confused.

“This house is just a facade.

A place to keep up the appearance of normality.

I am constantly moving. I have no home. I have no life.

I only exist… inside his world.”

The pain grew deeper.

“But I need you to do something for me.

Please.

Go back to the United States. Don’t tell anyone what you saw. Don’t try to contact me. And never come back here.

If he finds out… he might get suspicious.”

The sentence was left incomplete. But it didn’t need to be finished.

“I love you. Always.

And every Christmas… when you set an extra plate at the table… I felt it.

Even if I wasn’t with you… I was never truly gone.

Forgive me for not being the daughter you wanted. But let me keep being the one who protects you.

With love, Isabella.”

I don’t know how long I stayed there. Maybe minutes. Maybe hours. Time stopped mattering.

My daughter… Had suffered in silence for twelve years… just to protect me.

Suddenly, a noise made me jump. The downstairs door. Someone had entered.

I quickly closed the laptop.

Footsteps. Slow. Steady. Coming up the stairs.

I looked around desperately. There was nowhere to hide.

The footsteps drew closer. One. Two. Three.

The door opened. And there he was. Tall. Elegant. Cold.

Min-jun.

We looked at each other.

“Helen,” he said calmly. “I see you decided to visit us.”

I felt like the world was crashing down on me. But the fear… disappeared. Because now I knew the truth.

I stood up straight. “I came to see my daughter.”

A faint smile appeared on his face. “She is fine. Just as she always told you.”

I stared at him. “That’s not enough for me anymore.”

The atmosphere grew tense. He sighed. “Mothers… always complicate things.”

He took a step forward. “I will make you an offer. Go back to the States. Forget everything. Keep receiving the money.”

“And my daughter?”

His eyes gleamed with coldness. “She will continue to play her role.”

I clenched my fists. “I want to see her.”

His expression changed slightly. “That is not possible.”

“Then I won’t leave.”

Silence. We stared at each other, like in a duel.

He finally spoke: “You don’t understand what you are getting yourself into.”

“I understand it better than you think,” I replied. “Twelve years without seeing her… that is already too much.”

Pause.

And then… He smiled. But it wasn’t a kind smile. It was a decision.

“Very well. If you want to see her… you will have to accept the rules.”

My heart raced. “What rules?”

He stepped closer. “Once you enter this world… there is no way out.”

A shiver ran through me. But I didn’t hesitate. “Then take me to her.”

Because in that moment I understood something: The money didn’t matter. Neither did the fear. I didn’t cross the world just to give up.

I am her mother. And a mother… never abandons her daughter. Never.

And so, without realizing it… that day I didn’t just discover the truth. I also entered a world I might never be able to leave.

But this time… she wouldn’t be alone.
