Portland house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because Sarah had taken it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because they had tried to take her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the bottom, in her shaky handwriting, she had written one final sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou wanted me somewhere cheaper, so I left you exactly what your love was worth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the envelope were two checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One for David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p envelope was a week David thought he was trapping me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every receipt was a day I survived being underestimated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every dollar was proof that the woman he called the maid had been standing in the center of the truth all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on the top shelf of Martha\u2019s old dresser, inside the faded yellow folder, Robert\u2019s note to me remained folded in half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had finally read it after Martha died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It contained only three sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSarah, one day they may try to make you feel small enough to disappear. Do not believe them.
