the popsicle stick, the concrete was wet.

One tiny footprint appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

They walked from the old place where the tank had stood toward Daniel.

Small.

Barefoot.

Shining.

Daniel fell to his knees.

I heard him sob once.

Then a child’s voice whispered from the empty air:

—“Daddy.”

Daniel broke.

He reached forward, hands shaking, touching nothing, holding nothing, but crying as if someone small had just pressed against his chest.

And then we heard her.

Rebecca.

Not through a phone.

Not through a recording.

From the stairwell behind us.

Soft.

Tired.

Almost peaceful.

—“He waited for you.”

I turned.

The rooftop door was open.

No one stood there.

Only a gray housecoat hanging from the rusted railing, moving gently in the wind.

Daniel looked at me.

His face had gone pale.

—“Did you hear that?”

I nodded.

Neither of us said another word.

When the bulldozers came, the workers refused to touch the rooftop until the priest blessed it.

Even then, the first machine stalled.

The second broke a hydraulic line.

The third operator climbed down after ten minutes and quit on the spot.

He said there was a child standing in his mirror.

A wet boy.

Barefoot.

Pointing at the ground.

They delayed the demolition another week.

During that week, three letters arrived.

One at Cardenas’s prison.

One at Molina’s.

One at Maribel’s.

No return address.

No fingerprints.

No stamp anyone could trace.

Inside each envelope was a photocopy of Rebecca’s final notebook page.

And one small wet footprint.

Maribel screamed so loudly they had to move her to another unit.

Molina stopped sleeping.

Cardenas demanded a priest, then a lawyer, then his mother, then anyone who would believe him when he said a child kept scratching inside the pipes of his cell.

Nobody believed him.

That was Rebecca’s final revenge.

Not death.

Not a knife.

Not anything a court could measure.

She left them alive.

Alive enough to remember.

Alive enough to hear scratching every time the plumbing groaned.

Alive enough to wake at 2:17 every morning with their mouths open and their hands clawing at blankets that suddenly felt wet.

A year later, Pinecrest Cemetery changed Eli’s headstone.

Daniel asked me to come.

There were no reporters that day.

No neighbors pretending.

No priest speaking words too clean for the truth.

Just Daniel, me, and two graves beneath a gray sky.

The stone read:

ELI ALVAREZ

BELOVED SON

HE WAS NOT MISSING.

HE WAS WAITING.

Beside his name was Rebecca’s.

REBECCA ALVAREZ

BELOVED MOTHER

SHE NEVER STOPPED LOOKING.

Daniel placed flowers between them.

Then he set down a small blue sandal.

The match had been found in the tank.

He had kept it after the trial.

For a long time, nothing happened.

Then the wind moved.

A few dry leaves slid over the grass.

My phone vibrated.

I had changed numbers twice after that night.

Deleted Rebecca’s contact.

Thrown away the old phone.

Promised myself I would never again answer anything sent after midnight.

But the screen still lit up.

“Becca 2A”.

Daniel saw my face and stepped closer.

My hands trembled as I opened the message.

There was no voice this time.

Only a photo.

The rooftop.

The black water tank.

The yellow bulb.

Me standing beneath it, seen from behind.

And beside me, almost hidden in the darkness, a small barefoot boy holding Rebecca’s hand.

Under the photo were five words.

“Thank you for not looking.”

Daniel began to cry again.

I looked at the graves.

For the first time, Rebecca’s name did not feel heavy.

It did not feel buried in damp hallways.

It did not feel like something people had to whisper.

It felt finished.

Almost.

Because that night, when I returned home to my new apartment across town, I found a grocery bag hanging from my doorknob.

Empty.

Wrinkled.

Still damp.

Inside it was one thing.

A rusty piece of wire.

And written across it in Rebecca’s handwriting was a message I have never shown anyone.

“The tank was not the only
