The lesson all of this left me with was incredibly harsh: being a father doesn\u2019t start when you win a custody battle, nor does it end when you make a bank deposit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Being a father is showing up when it is entirely inconvenient, paying child support without resenting that your children are eating, caring for them without expecting a round of applause, and accepting that the mother of your children is not your enemy simply because she reminds you of the weight of the responsibilities you used to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I deeply regretted fighting for custody out of sheer pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But regretting it means nothing if you only want to be absolved and forgiven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
