Forgive me, Agnes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody went to pick him up right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authorities did what they had to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were questions, records, explanations\u2014that cold language that tries to fit old tragedies into neat lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since too many years had passed, nobody was talking about clear punishments anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My grandfather had been dead for more than two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aunt who helped hide Agnes was gone too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My uncle Ernest carried an enormous guilt, but he hadn\u2019t been the one who made the decision that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, he had to give a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had to say out loud what he had kept secret almost his entire life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that, even if it doesn\u2019t seem like enough justice, was the first true burial of the lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, a different kind of mass was held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t the elegant mass that my uncle wanted to finish quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a tiny mass, with fewer flowers and more truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They placed Nana Rosie\u2019s coffin at the front and, next to it, a small urn for Agnes\u2019s remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My mom placed the wet rosary between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody knew how to explain why it was still damp, even though more than a day had passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Aurelius didn\u2019t try to explain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He only said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014\u201dThere are pains that take many years to dry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the homily, he spoke about the secrets that are inherited like old furniture, about the shame used to lock women away, about the little girls erased to protect family names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He didn\u2019t say it shouting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said it slowly, with the tired voice of someone who also knew that story and perhaps had stayed silent for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterward, he looked toward my uncle Ernest and added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014\u201dForgiveness doesn\u2019t begin when we are absolved.
